Criticality of resting-state EEG pred→♥icts perturbational co •♣εmplexity and level of conscioγ₽ usness during anesthesia
Consciousness has been proposγα&±ed to be supported by electro β$physiological patterns poised at critic₽←ality, a dynamical regime'∏π≤ which exhibits adapt π≠ive computational properti₽₽γes, maximally complex patter©¶ ns and divergent sensitivity βε✔ to perturbation. Here, we investigateφ£d dynamical properties of the restin♥€g-state electroencephalogram of♣→ healthy subjects unde ♣¶rgoing general anesthesia with propofoφ♥>∑l, xenon or ketamine. We thשen studied the relation of thesφ©δe dynamic properties wit€←↑h the perturbational complexity index (¥±PCI), which has shown remark ε≠<ably high sensitivity in detecting≤∏λ♣ consciousness indepφ↓endent of behavior. All parti₽♥cipants were unresponsive unδ© ₩der anesthesia, while consciousness←$ was retained only duri÷₩∞£ng ketamine anesthesia (inσ₽₹ the form of vivid dreams)., en abling an experimental dissociation™≈ between unresponsiveness and unconscio☆βusness. We estimated (i) avα★alanche criticality, (' ∑ii) chaoticity, and (iii) c₩&riticality-related measures, ↕÷and found that states of unconsciousn♦∏ess were characterized by a distancin≤π₽g from both the edge of ↓↓§activity propagation and ©₹the edge of chaos. We were then able >δto predict individual s¶✘Ωubjects' PCI (i.e., PC±<↓Imax) with a mean absoluteγε¶' error below 7%. Our results§Ω establish a firm link between tδ"®♠he PCI and criticality and φ&provide further evide÷σε↕nce for the role of criticality in≈®↕ the emergence of consc♦σ∑iousness.
